- About us
As a medical volunteer in Romania you will have the unique opportunity to work in a busy medical emergency department situated in Targu Mures. Here you will be exposed to the first class medical services and procedures that are available.
You will be working at SMURD, the Emergency and Resuscitation Mobile Service. This department, which is situated next to the main hospital, was updated in 2012 to become a world class facility with state of the art equipment. Open 24/7, it is an extremely busy department from which there is a lot to learn. As a medical volunteer, you will be tasked with joining the emergency team and assisting in any way that you and the team feel you are capable of, dependent on your skill level and knowledge. Working on a shift rotation and long hours, it will be challenging but will allow you to experience the department fully. Your tasks could involve measuring vital signs, such as, IV access, taking blood, ECG, as well as more general tasks around the department.
The Volunteer experience in this department will differ due to the varying demands of the project and incoming cases in the department, so you should be committed and be prepared to work in this fast paced environment with the challenges that it faces. Volunteers will acquire knowledge and skills about medical practices in Romania, gain firsthand experience of front line emergency medical services, and assist in a number of minor procedures.
Romania is an undiscovered gem of Europe, where the Carpathian Mountains provide a stunning centrepiece to a country dominated by medieval castles and rustic village communities. The beautiful natural landscapes and rich history make it an alluring destination for gap year travel.
You will be based in Targu Mures within Transylvania. The region has a distinctive character with dramatic medieval castles and scenic villages making it a great place to discover rustic Romanian culture while you volunteer abroad.
Transylvania is best known as the setting for Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula and the region is rich with Gothic architecture and medieval villages. The area is very mountainous and the Carpathian Mountains are a star attraction for outdoor enthusiasts.
The program is situated in Targu Mures. The easiest way to arrive is by plane to the international airport located in the city. If you are flying into Bucharest you can either get a bus (once a day) or organise an internal flight.
