- About us
This overseas travel adventure combines international volunteering and an incredible travel itinerary to make a once in a lifetime trip.
The Peru Community Challenge takes place in traditional Peruvian community in the Sacred Valley, where your help can make a real difference to the struggling locals. By working in these small communities you will have the opportunity to support them with a wide range of contributions including English lessons, renovation work and more.
You can also see the impact of our charity, the FutureSense Foundation, in the area. The volunteering project is truly unique and will test your ability to communicate and achieve goals as part of a team. You will see a different side of Peru whilst on this challenge, and make the most of your time in country.
Upon arrival in Cusco airport you will be met and transferred to your accommodation to relax and settle in. After an induction and orientation, you can begin exploring the exciting mix of old and new civilisations. You will also start to acclimatize to high altitudes as Cusco is over 3,000m above sea level.
As a participant on this program, you will have a fantastic opportunity to support local schools and community projects around the Sacred Valley. Your work whilst on project could span a wide range of contributions such as teaching English, redecorating and refurbishing the buildings, and leading sports, drama, and arts and crafts activities in the form of extra-curricular clubs.
This is your chance to volunteer abroad and make a real difference to the lives of those less fortunate. Alongside the FutureSense Foundation, Challenges Abroad are working towards creating a sustainable difference to underprivileged communities around the world. Through our youth empowerment program, we support local students looking for a career in the tourism sector, so the opportunity of communicating in English is invaluable to them. This is an incredible opportunity for participants to help others and make a positive impact on the world.
Depending upon your flight home, you may have some free time in Cusco to enjoy your remaining time in Peru. Or you can continue on our fantastic extension trip and trek to the magnificent Machu Picchu!

This will be the hardest day trekking as we will be climbing from 3300m up to a pass at 4600m close to Nevado Salkantay – the highest part of the trek. It will be a truly spectacular day! An early breakfast begins the third day and we will walk for about 2 hours before stopping for lunch in Wiñaypoco. After another 3 hours of descent through changing vegetation we will arrive at the village of La Playa. Much of the path follows a small river with waterfalls, and we may see parrots, hummingbirds, orchids, bamboo and much more in the tropical forest. La Playa is the biggest village on the way, where we can find some small shops to buy snacks etc. In this area we can see coffee and banana plantations. On arrival to La Playa you will either spend the afternoon in la Playa and camp there, then in the morning catch a public bus to Hidroeléctrica of take local transport to Santa Teresa, a beautiful village in the cloud forest, where we will spend the afternoon with the option of visiting the hot pools and camp the night.
The morning will be spent walking to Hidroeléctrica through a remote valley road alongside some impressive hydroelectric developments in the Urubamba River. Originally used to transport agricultural products to the population of Machu Picchu, along this trail we will see some beautiful coffee plantations and subtropical fruits and crops. From there we will continue to Aguas Calientes where you will see the impressive Machu Picchu. Once we arrive in Aguas Calientes we enjoy a group dinner and spend the night there in a hostel.
We will take the first bus (approx.05.30am) to Machu Picchu, where we will have a guided tour of about 2.5 hours in Machu Picchu.
