Romania is one of the most beautiful countries in Eastern Europe and a fascinating destination to explore. Romania boasts an intriguing blend of medieval castles, communist history, rustic village culture and sprawling modern cities. It is also blessed with some spectacular scenery, including the Carpathian Mountains, the second longest mountain range in Europe.
Despite seeing strong economic growth since the turn of the millennium, Romania still has remnants of Rustic European charm. Even in cities where you will find cars racing down the streets, you will almost anywhere find horse-drawn buggies, green mountains, cone shaped haystacks and flocks of sheep bouncing along. This stems from centuries of self-sufficient communities in Romania that were unable to travel far due to the hilly and mountainous terrain.
For those with an eye for amazing architecture, Romania will not disappoint. From grand Gothic buildings to spectacular castles and palaces, as well as numerous churches and monasteries. Don’t forget to visit Dracula’s Castle! Many of these architectural attractions perch precariously on the edge of rocky hilltops, which only adds to the visual awe.
Tourism is on the rise in Romania, but it is still not the first choice location for holiday-makers. This means that most of the country is unspoilt and maintains its traditional roots. This extends to the people of Romania that you will volunteer with, who are friendly and welcoming, and will truly embrace the opportunity to interact and learn from you.
Our volunteer projects are based in Keresztúr, which lies in central Romania, halfway between Targu Mures and Brasov. The medieval city of Brasov is a fantastic and stunning location, surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, with narrow cobbled streets and a central square that is perfect for whiling the day away watching the world go past. You can also take a cable car up the mountain for fantastic views over the city, and some perfect photo opportunities. Romania’s picturesque landscape also lends itself to the opportunity to explore. Spend your weekends hiking in the hills, or boating on the lake, the choice is yours!
Whatever you choose to do with your time in Romania, you will come away with a whole new perspective on the country, and memories that will last a lifetime. Check out our opportunities below…
