Flexibility really is the best word to describe the Community Support volunteering role. As a Challenges Abroad volunteer what you do on this project will depend entirely on your own skills and interests. For example, volunteers may help local children and teenagers, ages 8-16, to become employable through teaching vocational classes in computers, music or textiles. Other volunteers may also teach English and help to develop the curriculum. Even if you don’t feel you have much to offer, English language lessons broaden the scope of future employment options and are currently the most popular classes at the centre.
You will be helping the children by teaching English but also getting involved in other subjects and activities depending on your own skills and interests. This can include helping pupils with art and craft activities, coaching sports after school, improving environmental awareness and growing vegetables in the gardens. During school holidays, gap year volunteers can provide informal teaching, run games and summer camps and help with renovation work.
This community volunteer project is a meaningful way to immerse yourself into life in Cambodia, while helping children in genuine need. By bringing English skills, enthusiasm and creativity, volunteers can help to enrich the education and lives of local children, who suffer from scarce resources and basic facilities.
This is an incredibly rewarding project and you will spend your time surrounded by beautiful scenery. Battambang itself is in a great location with Thailand and Siem Reap both easily accessible.
Cambodia is located in the southern portion of the Indochina Peninsula, between Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. Cambodia is a tropical country with wide ranging geographical features including stunning mountains, rivers and a long stretch of coastline. A history marked by suffering is hard to spot on the surface as the people are extremely friendly and their joy for life is infectious.
The province of Battambang is dominated by agriculture and is known within Cambodia for its exceptional natural beauty. The namesake capital city of Battambang stands apart from well known cities, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap in that is has not yet experienced the same high volumes of western tourism.
Battambang city is located along the Sangker River and due to the surviving French colonial buildings and promenades has peculiar and unique charms. In town you can visit the local museum, the pagodas, a small 16th century Chinese temple, and the numerous statues placed on almost every street corner. For $3-4 you can hire a wooden boat to take you on trips along the river, which is particularly beautiful at sunrise and sunset. There are a handful of Western orientated restaurants and bars.
Volunteers are advised to fly into Siem Reap where you will be picked up at the airport and it is around a 3 hour transfer to Battambang. If you’re looking for a cheaper option then you can fly to Bangkok and get a bus to Poipet, where we can pick you up!
