Week 1: In your first week you will take part in an orientation. During this time you will be immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of Cusco, introduced to the country staff (including your Spanish teachers).
Week 1-5: Your volunteer placement aims at improving the conversational English skills of young Peruvian children. While teaching experience is useful, all we ask is that you bring your unique skills, enthusiasm and personality to this rewarding project that can make a real difference to the social mobility of children in the Sacred Valley. This is also the most incredible opportunity to develop your own Spanish speaking skills through lessons and while working with the local staff.
Week 6: Finally, spend 5 days on the fabulous Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. The Salkantay Trek is very popular among participants and far less trodden than the Inca Trail. This trek allows you to discover hidden Peru: from the Andes to the jungle floor and all the way to the ruins of Machu Picchu.
In addition to the satisfaction of making a difference to the lives of less privileged children, many volunteers feel they gain enormously themselves from their placements. You will witness the full beauty of Peru and develop your Spanish speaking skills on this incredibly rewarding project.
Peru faces many social and economic issues and children often do not receive the learning that they need. This project involves teaching English to young children of all ages. Children in Peru attend school in the mornings and are often left alone for the rest of the day whilst their parents work. This project is a great opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of underprivileged children while you have an amazing and action packed gap year.
This project aims to provide Peruvian children with a safe and happy environment where they are able to learn English and develop key skills for social mobility in the future
Working with children always means that you need bundles of energy! You will be teaching in a school of mixed ages and abilities for about 3-5 hours a day for around 20 hours a week. You will work alongside local teachers as a teaching assistant, helping the children to learn conversational English and developing your own Spanish speaking skills.
Peru is the intriguingly iconic land of the Incas and one of the most enchanting places on earth; from the astonishing and ancient city of Machu Picchu to the Amazon rainforest; from the Colca canyons to the man-made reed islands of Lake Titicaca: floating homes for an ancient culture that has remained much the same.
This program is located in the area close to Cusco, in the Peruvian Andes at an altitude of 3,399m (11,152ft) above sea level, Cusco is the perfect setting to volunteer abroad in Peru. Cusco is a mix of ancient, old and new. The vibrant historic centre provides endless hours of exploring and the surrounding areas are perfect for those looking for adventure.
Cusco is the ideal destination to base yourself during your gap year in South America. From the city you can visit indigenous markets and Incan ruins as well as mountain biking, horse back riding and white water rafting in the Sacred Valley. Travelling further afield to the beautiful city of Arequipa, the Colca Canyon and Lake Titicaca on the border of Bolivia is also easy to do. Large coaches are used for long-distance travel between cities. The buses vary in level of comfort and price but most tourist class buses have reclining seats, videos, refreshments, and bathrooms.
Volunteers can fly into Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport, Cusco and will be met at the airport and transferred to their project location.
This volunteer project lasts 6 weeks.
