- About us
Volunteers are expected to teach English and can incorporate other subjects according to their own skills and areas of interest, including sport, computers, music, art and drama. The children you will be teaching are aged between 4 and 16 and class sizes vary depending upon the school or organisation. Providing personal language tuition or teacher training for local staff would also be an excellent way to ensure the continued impact of your volunteering.
You can expect to find minimal resources, insufficient numbers of local teachers and wide discrepancies in levels of English. There is therefore a great need for support and input from volunteers who bring English, inspiration and fun to the schools. Volunteers can help to compensate for deficiencies in basic resources and can make a real difference to the quality of the children’s education.
The projects are well organised so that volunteers can make a real contribution in a relatively short amount of time. Pre-departure briefings, and the offer of continuous support from the local coordinator, helps with preparation and enables volunteers to maximise their contribution as well as enjoying their own experience.
Through this Cambodian volunteer project you will help give children a chance at a better education. The students are so appreciative and eager to learn so your efforts can have a big impact on their lives and open up new doors in their futures.
This volunteer teaching role requires no qualifications or previous experience, just enthusiasm and a willingness to engage children in the opportunities of education. You will gain invaluable teaching experience and learn about Cambodian culture by becoming immersed in the local community.
Cambodia is located in the southern portion of the Indochina Peninsula, between Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. Cambodia is a tropical country with wide ranging geographical features including stunning mountains, rivers and a long stretch of coastline. A history marked by suffering is hard to spot on the surface as the people are extremely friendly and their joy for life is infectious.
The province of Battambang is dominated by agriculture and is known within Cambodia for its exceptional natural beauty. The namesake capital city of Battambang stands apart from well known cities, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap in that is has not yet experienced the same high volumes of western tourism.
Battambang city is located along the Sangker River and, due to the surviving French colonial buildings and promenades, has peculiar and unique charms. In town you can visit the local museum, the pagodas, a small 16th century Chinese temple, and the numerous statues placed on almost every street corner. For $3-4 you can hire a wooden boat to take you on trips along the river, which is particularly beautiful at sunrise and sunset. There are a handful of Western orientated restaurants and bars.
Volunteers are advised to fly into Siem Reap where you will be picked up at the airport and it is around a 3 hour transfer to Battambang. If you’re looking for a cheaper option then you can fly to Bangkok and get a bus to Poipet, where we can pick you up!
This volunteer project lasts a minimum of two weeks. To give you greatest flexibility in your volunteer experience we give you the option of extending your stay on a week-by-week basis.
