- About us
You will discover what skills the locals possess, the business opportunities surrounding them, and also their potential market reach. This insight will allow you to be a part of the creation or expansion of a sustainable social enterprise.
Challenges Abroad are looking for participants who can bring their skills, experience, and passion to these small communities to help develop not only the business skills of the locals, but of themselves. As the presence and recognition of social enterprises grow in Thailand, and across the globe, this is a wonderful opportunity for you to increase your understanding of the concept. By broadening your perspectives, you will be able to grow as a volunteer and a global citizen. The long term goal of the project being that through the concept of social enterprise these communities can address their low economic stature in a sustainable manner.
Upon arrival in Chiang Mai we will be met by the in-country team at the airport and transferred to our accommodation, where we can relax and settle in.
During this week we will have our induction and orientation, in which we’ll be introduced to our project and Thai culture. We will spend time at a local university to learn about social enterprise in the Thai context, working with university faculty, meeting local social entrepreneurs and visiting social enterprises in the area. We will deepen our understanding of Thai social enterprise and become inspired with ideas of what could be possible!
During this week we will live and work in the hill tribes, immersing ourselves in the villager’s daily lives to understand their skills, needs and challenges. We will work together as a mini consultancy team with the village to identify new or existing opportunities for social enterprise development, rapidly prototyping our ideas with the objective of designing a business model framework for a potential social enterprise – assessing its feasibility and sustainability.
Depending on the outcomes generated in week two, we may need to visit the villages again, work in Mae Sariang to collect more data, or might agree that we are ready to work with the locals to start bringing the solution to life.
We will reflect on our efforts, summarise our findings into a pitch deck and present our social enterprise ideas to the in-country team, members of the local community and faculty from a local university.
At the end of the project we will participate in a debrief and reflective session, provide feedback on the project and complete an exit interview.
