- About us
You will discover what skills the locals possess, the business opportunities surrounding them, and also their potential market reach. This insight will allow you to be a part of the creation or expansion of a sustainable social enterprise.
Challenges Abroad are looking for participants who can bring their skills, experience, and passion to these small communities to help develop not only the business skills of the locals, but of themselves. As the presence and recognition of social enterprises grow in Thailand, and across the globe, this is a wonderful opportunity for you to increase your understanding of the concept. By broadening your perspectives, you will be able to grow as a volunteer and a global citizen. The long term goal of the project being that through the concept of social enterprise these communities can address their low economic stature in a sustainable manner.
Upon arrival to Chiang Mai airport you will be met by one of our in-country team. After transferring to your accommodation you will have time to settle in before being invited out for a welcome meal and orientation.
You’ll spend these first few days developing your understanding of Thai social enterprises and local developmental challenges. Meeting with the professors in the relevant faculty at a Chiang Mai University and local changemakers, you’ll take as much information on board as possible to prepare you for your project.
In the second half of the week, you will travel to the regional city of Mae Sariang which forms the centre of our community development hub and the gateway to the Pa Pae sub-district of the Hill Tribe villages. You will visit one or more of our partner villages to immerse yourself in the cultural diversity of different ethnis minorities and learn about local culture, history and religion of Thailand from Thai locals.
Today you will transfer to your social enterprise project. The journey to the villages usually lasts between four to six hours in a 4×4 truck. Have your camera ready to capture all the beauty of the Northern Thai landscapes!
This is when you undertake your project and help develop local social enterprises that address the needs of the community. You will have the exciting opportunity to work within a local community to address development needs through sustainable business ideas.
Social enterprise is fast becoming a well-recognised and successful model for addressing developmental needs through sustainable business development. As such, you will be spending your project working with local communities to develop new or expand existing social enterprise models that are aimed at increasing revenue in the area.
As you are immersed into the community, you will quickly learn the restrictions and hardships that they possess. After ascertaining the developmental needs and how they can be addressed, you will be able to identify the skills of the locals and the business opportunities that surround them. With the help of your business knowledge, the locals should be able to increase the reach of their enterprise, improve their operational effectiveness, and ultimately generate income while helping address a social issue.
Transfer back to Chiang Mai.
Today you will have the opportunity to present your findings and results to the faculty and the Challenges Abroad in-country team.
