Despite its charming culture, Cambodia faces a range of social and economic issues, with many families not receiving the support they need thrive. On this internship you'll work hand in hand with our in-country team on a range of grass-roots programs that will help create a brighter future for the local community, while developing crucial transferrable skills. Depending on your area of study, you'll have the opportunity to complete an internship focusing on one of the following areas:
You'll delve into issues related to the accessibility and quality of education in our partner community. The education programs you'll be working on generally support schools and education providers that reach out to underprivileged communities and students from the more disadvantaged sections of society. These organisations are generally underfunded, have few resources and have poor infrastructure. Your challenge will be to see how within this context, quality education can be accessible to the most underprivileged groups in the community.
You'll get the opportunity to understand and help resolve health issues in our partner community. You could be working with local health centres or local schools to understand key health issues, conduct assessments and help develop programs to improve the health of the children and adults. We run health camps and health awareness workshops in the local community, as an intern you'll be able to shape the content for these activities based upon your understanding and research into the issues affecting the local community.
This is the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills in a completely different setting to what you're used to. In the community where we work, concepts of business and commerce aren't common knowledge and income generation opportunities are limited. You'll work alongside our team to lead and develop business skills programs, monitor current initiatives and see where there could be opportunity for income generation through social enterprise. Through your knowledge and an innovative approach you will be able to develop a range of programs that will address economic development and improve the livelihoods of the most underprivileged members of the community.
You'll get real hands on experience of grass-roots community development programs. You will work with our team to monitor and assess current programs, conduct research and build partnerships with the local community. You may be focusing on enhancing programs we current implement in the community or developing programs based on opportunities identified in your research. Your focus will cover a range of issues including education, health and wellbeing and income generation opportunities.
Cambodia has been such an incredible experience! I am forever grateful to have been part of a team who was able to support the Khmer locals and be part of a greater good. This trip has enabled me to become more grateful for everything.Dounya Abdullatif - Deakin University
Definitely the hardest and most rewarding 3 weeks of my life. I've learnt to be grateful for everything that we have in Australia, because there are kids that don't have the educational opportunities we all take for granted. Massive thank you to all the people of Cambodia for being so kind, the friends I've made along this trip and to Challenges Abroad for making this experience possible.Andrew Mudgway - Victoria University
To say my trip was an amazing experience would be a serious understatement. I learnt so much about the world and about myself through my time in Cambodia and I will never forget the generosity and spirit of the people I met along the way.Celine Chong - University of Queensland
