Despite its serenity and vibrant culture, Palampur faces many social and economic challenges, with many families not receiving the support they need to thrive. On this Challenge you will spend two weeks working on a range of health promotion interventions aimed at improving awareness in the community of key health issues.
You will be working with local community members including school children, teachers and parents to deliver health workshops focusing on important health topics like hygiene and sanitation, human anatomy and bodily function, diet and nutrition, mental health, girls and women’s health and non-communicable diseases. These workshops will play a big role in increasing the overall health of the community, as locals will receive the knowledge they need to keep themselves and their families healthy.
Following an induction and orientation when you arrive, your project days will be Monday-Friday with the weekend free to travel and explore. We recommend heading to nearby Dharamshala to visit the home of the Dalai Lama and the exiled Tibetan government, or if you’re more of an adrenaline junkie you could go paragliding from the second highest location in the world!
After your Challenge you can join our optional extension trip and spend a week on the most spectacular tour of India. You'll begin by heading to Amristar where you'll visit the Golden Temple and watch the famous lowering of the flags ceremony at the Wagah Border. Next up is Agra where you'll spend time exploring the Red Fort, local markets and the one and only Taj Mahal! Your final destination will be Delhi where you'll visit the Old and New cities and have plenty of time to do you own exploring before catching your flight home.
The community here have so little, yet they go above and beyond and give you everything to make you feel welcome, and in turn we were able to make a difference in an ongoing project. Best 3 weeks of my life.Aoife McCann - Griffith University student
Volunteering has been one of the best decisions I've made! I've met such amazing kids and learnt so much from them. Leave your handprint on the world because you will find yourself changed forever.Fiona Chen - University of Queensland student
