Despite the sheer beauty of the Sacred Valley and it’s awe-inspiring mountain backdrop, the region faces many environmental challenges. On this Challenge you will head into the Amazon rainforest to explore and learn about sustainability and conservation before taking your knowledge back to the community to raise awareness on key environmental issues.
You will spend your first week in the Amazon Rainforest visiting one of the most protected natural areas in all of South America. You will learn about environmental sustainability and protection from conservation experts and indigenous communities as you visit the Manu National Park, Wayquecha Biological Station, the Santa Rosa de Huacaria community and the Villa Carmen Biological Station. You'll explore canopy walkways, bamboo forests, countless waterfalls, orchid fields and native birds in an unforgettable week!
In the second week you'll be in the Sacred Valley, based at one of our partner schools in Urubamba. You'll be working on our environmental education program, delivering workshops that will raise awareness of environmental issues within the community, equipped with your knowledge from your week in the Amazon! We encourage our volunteers to be creative and deliver fun workshops that will both engage children and allow them to learn in a hands-on manner.
After your Challenge you can join our optional extension trip and embark on the Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu, a truly once in a lifetime experience. On this 5-day trek you'll walk more than 70km and reach an altitude of 4600m above sea level as you make your way to South America's most famous landmark. You'll see Humantay Lake, cross Salkantay Mountain and pass through cloud forests before reaching Machu Picchu for that bucket list moment at the end of your trip!
Volunteering in Peru has been the most amazing, rewarding and at times a challenging experience with an incredible group of people. This little part of the world will always have a place in my heart.Isabella McConachy - Queensland University of Technology
There is not a better feeling than feeling like you’ve made a difference. This challenge gave me that opportunity. Living, working and playing in Peru enabled me to see, hear, feel and taste this beautiful culture and I’m forever grateful for the Challenges Abroad team for ensuring my safety and well-being when it came to trying new food and climbing to new heights. It took my breath away- literally!Brianna Clunes - University of the Sunshine Coast student
This program has been really amazing, getting to know the kids and actually leaving a mark in a school in a different country is so cool.Shania Watson - University of Queensland student
